Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet is an alliance of businesses, nonprofit organizations and individuals determined to ensure our planet and future generations thrive. 

1% for the Planet was founded to prevent greenwashing, certify reputable giving and provide accountability. The 1% for the Planet certification is given to members that meet the high-bar commitment—donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes.
